Bargaining made easy: How to negotiate confidently

Bargaining is a common practice in many African markets, where it is seen as an art form and a way to engage with local culture.

Successfully negotiating prices can lead to significant savings and a more authentic shopping experience. Understanding the nuances of bargaining in these vibrant markets requires patience, respect, and some strategic thinking.

Here are some practical tips to help you navigate the bustling stalls and get the best deals possible.

*PREPARATION*

*Research prices beforehand*

Before you hit the market, it helps to have a rough idea of what things normally go for. This way, you have a benchmark to negotiate from, and you’re less likely to be ripped off. You can inquire about locals or look for travel advice on online forums. Knowing average prices gives you an edge during bargaining, letting you negotiate without hurting vendors’ sentiments.

*Start with a smile*

A friendly demeanor takes you a long way in any negotiation process. Starting your interaction with a smile sets a positive tone and builds rapport with the vendor. This way, sellers are often more open to offering discounts or better deals. Remember that bargaining is not just about price but also about creating connections, so being polite throughout the conversation is essential.

*Offer half of the asking price*

A common strategy while bargaining is to offer half of what the vendor initially asks for. This trick gives you the headspace to negotiate, while hinting that you’re interested in buying but not at their starting rate. Vendors anticipate counteroffers, so don’t shy away from suggesting your price confidently, but respectfully. Get ready for back-and-forth discussions until both of you settle on agreeable amount.

*Know when to walk away*

Knowing wh.en to walk away from a deal can be your best bet at bargaining efficiently. If talks go nowhere, or you’re unhappy with the quoted price, thank the vendor politely and begin to leave slowly. More often than not, this makes them reconsider their offer, as they might dread losing out on a sale completely. At times , this even gets you surprise discounts/better terms from sellers themselves!

GOV OTTI FLAGS OFF AUDA-NEPAD PROGRAM, DESCRIBES SMALLHOLDER FARMERS AS THE BACKBONE OF OUR FOOD PRODUCTION

The Executive Governor of Abia State, His Excellency Dr. Alex Chioma Otti,OFR, has assured Abia farmers and development partners in the agricultural sector of government’s full support to achieve food sufficiency.

Dr. Otti made this known during the flag off ceremony of the African Union Development Agency-New Partnership For Africa’s Development (AUDA-NEPAD) Innovative Strengthening of Smallholder Farmers Initiative in Abia State.

Represented by his deputy, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, Otti described the event as a testament of commitment, both from our state and from the African Union, to transform agriculture, strengthen our rural economy, and improve the livelihoods of our hardworking smallholder farmers.

He noted that “Abia has not only been selected as one of the seven pilot states for this continental initiative but has also fulfilled its counterpart funding obligations, thereby showing seriousness and readiness to embrace agricultural innovation”.

He regretted that though smallholder farmers form the backbone of our food production, they face challenges of access to finance, modern farming techniques, extension services and reliable markets. Joyfully, “the AUDA-NEPAD program seeks to address these gaps by equipping our farmers with new knowledge and technologies, improving productivity and food security, enhancing incomes and reducing poverty in our rural communities as well as strengthening our state’s agricultural value chains to make them globally competitive”, Otti stated.

The Governor expressed confidence that with determination, our farmers will no longer remain at the margins but at the very center of agricultural growth and prosperity.

In his welcome address, the Honourable Commissioner for Agriculture and focal person AUDA-NEPAD Abia State, Dr. Cliff Agbaeze described the program as a landmark initiative that is designed to support, empower and uplift these smallholder farmers through the provision of modern improved inputs, training, impactful agricultural and climate smart practices as well as structured market access to enhance productivity,
cut post harvest losses and secure higher more dependable income.

He revealed that the program is strategically aimed at improving food security, creating jobs and generating wealth for our teeming population. Dr. Agbaeze noted that a total of 17,000 households are targeted for support across the 17 local government areas of the state with the pilot scheme having 1,000 farmers. He appreciated the Governor for providing the counterpart funding for the program and described the event as a celebration of excellence, resilience and the boundless potential of Abia people. He further encouraged the beneficiaries to embrace this golden opportunity with dedication and diligence while assuring AUDA-NEPAD national office that the program in Abia will yield remarkable results.

Presenting a remark on behalf of the National Coordinator and CEO of AUDA-NEPAD Nigeria, Hon. Jabiru Salisu Abdullahi Tsauri, the Director Program and Implementation, Hajia Fatima Abubakar Ibrahim stated that Abia State was selected as one of the pioneer 7 pilot states that received grants under the smallholder farmers program. She noted that it is “a testament to the potentials and promises domiciled within the agricultural communities in Abia State”. Hajia Ibrahim highlighted that the program aims to enhance farming practices, increase our potential and ultimately improve lives and prosperity of Abia people.

She called for a proper utilization of the fund with utmost effectiveness and efficiency in all the farming sectors as its successful implementation will undoubtedly strengthen the position of Abia State for other transformative initiatives such as the ambitious solar powered lightning of one million houses, bringing light and opportunities to our communities.

In his remark, the Mayor of Isiukwuato Local Government Area and Chairman ALGON Abia State, Hon. Chinedu Ekeke underscored the need to give smallholder farmers the necessary support they deserve.

“We must ensure that the smallholder farmer does two things better; produces more food and then makes more money from farming. And I have sat here throughout this period and I.have seen that that is actually the target of this program- to ensure that the rural smallholder farmer produces more through improved inputs, improved techniques and then when there is more food, the offtakers will also be made available so that from production you go to the market. And then our people will have more money in their pockets, more food to feed themselves, more food to feed their children and their neighbors and their entire community. That’s basically what I understand this to be”, Ekeke stated.

He noted that Mayors across the state are diving into agriculture with at least 14LGAs engaging in two special agricultural programs each, aimed at boosting food sufficiency and generating income. He told the audience that in his council, he is embarking on a 50-hecter cassava farming to improve livelihood and create wealth.

The event was well attended by top government functionaries, traditional rulers,Abia farmers and stakeholders in the agricultural sector.

The Deputy Governor highlighted the current administration’s focus on youth empowerment, pointing to initiatives like the training of over 1,000 youths at CSS Farm in Nasarawa and giving start-ups to the beneficiaries, the ongoing Abia State Leadership Academy Boot Camp which aims to train 1,000 Abia Youths aged between 16-20 years, with the pioneer batch of 250 young individuals undergoing leadership skills training, which serves as a clear demonstration of Governor Alex Chioma Otti-led government’s dedication to preparing and empowering the next generation of leaders.

He called on them to remain steadfast in their support to the current administration while assuring governments continued provision of people oriented projects with the limited available resources.

“I urge you to continue to collaborate with the government under the leadership of Dr. Alex Otti, OFR. This administration is committed to reforms implementation and creation of more opportunities for the youth in Abia State. We don’t blow our trumpets, but we try as much as possible to do the best we can with the limited resources available to us. Under a space of two years, we paid off over 60% of inherited debts from the previous administration without borrowing.

“The Governor’s vision is to transform the state into a benchmark for inclusive governance, ensuring that youths, women, and all stakeholders are actively involved in the development process”, Emetu stated.

Earlier in his address, the Immediate Past Chairman of the Abia State chapter of YOWICAN, Apostle Ogbuka Uche Ph.D., congratulated Governor Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, and his Deputy, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu for the two years of transformation in all sectors of the state.

“There is no gainsaying the fact that your administration has proved beyond any reasonable doubt that there is a fresh air in Abia State. From the feeders we have received from the grassroots in our various churches, platforms and communities, from Teachers, Pensioners, Civil Servants, it seems that the administration of Governor Alex Otti has changed the several and wasted years of maladministration that has characterized the previous experiences that we have witnessed in the State”, Dr. Uche said.

He described the Youth Wing of Christian Association of Nigeria as “the foremost ecumenical youth organization in Nigeria that interface between the government, the church and the communities on matters of faith and how best to employ religion to the betterment of the society “.

He called for a partnership with the government to enhance its civic education and voter sensitization campaigns throughout Abia communities as well as the provision of a bus
to aid in grassroots mobilization efforts, particularly in preparation for upcoming continuous voter registration exercises. He emphasized that such initiatives are crucial for combating voter apathy and maintaining the progress in good governance that has been observed under Governor Otti’s administration.

The visit saw the presentation of the newly elected Executive Members of the organization to the Deputy Governor.

The Death of Deep Thinking in a Hustling Nation – By Basil Odilim

I live in Nigeria—physically. But mentally, I no longer live here.

My body walks these roads. I breathe the air, endure the blackouts, hear the noise, and feel the tension in every overcrowded market and traffic jam. But my mind? It has relocated to a saner future. Not out of arrogance—but for survival. Because if I allowed my entire being to be absorbed into this present reality, I would either go mad or conform to the madness.

Nigeria is not a country that rewards deep thinking. It is a place built for hustling. For scrambling. For grabbing. And in a culture where urgency is king, depth dies a quiet death.

Let’s be clear: the problem is not just the economy. It is the culture that the economy has birthed and sustained. A culture where the goal is not to build a better world but to collect whatever crumbs one can before the next person does. We don’t work to change systems—we work to extract from them. That’s why real vision is rare. That’s why long-term thinking is almost extinct. Because you can’t go deep when you’re barely staying afloat.

Who, in this daily chaos, has time to think about a 10-year investment? A generation-long project? A purpose bigger than personal escape? It’s almost unthinkable. Not because we’re lazy or dull—but because the human brain, when trapped in survival mode, simply cannot think long-term. It becomes wired for the next bill, the next job, the next fuel price. Vision collapses into urgency. Legacy gives way to luck.

And so, hustling becomes culture. Hustling, by design, is short-term. You don’t plant trees when you need firewood tonight. You don’t invest in education when you need lunch. The average Nigerian isn’t dreaming of changing the world—they’re dreaming of escaping it. Morality bends, patience snaps, and shortcuts become instinct. Because in this culture, survival is success—and strategy is often seen as a waste of time.

But culture did not fall from the sky. It was shaped over decades—by leaders who rewarded loyalty over merit by institutions that punished integrity and glorified fraud by a society that slowly came to believe that ends always justify means. And now, even the best minds are cornered. Forced to either flee, fake it, or fall in line.

Think of dogs. There are intelligent breeds, aggressive ones, loyal ones. But even the smartest dog, placed in the wrong environment—where discipline is punished and corruption is rewarded—will underperform or turn wild. So, too, with people. Our problem isn’t a lack of intelligence. It’s a cultural starvation of discipline. We have not been trained to delay gratification, to drill deep, or to endure the long drought before the harvest.

Even the talented suffocate. Imagine if our best footballers had been forced to stay in Nigeria. Would they have become stars? Or would they still be dribbling on dusty streets, hoping someone “connects” them? Without structure, even brilliance decays.

And in this decay, shortcuts take over. From padded contracts to fake certificates, from ritual brotherhoods to quiet bribery, the logic is the same: the system won’t reward honesty, so bend it before it breaks you. And when those who bend the system are the ones we celebrate, what reason does anyone have to build anything that lasts?

We often say Nigeria’s economy is broken. But a broken economy can be fixed with policy. A broken culture, however, takes generations to rebuild. Because culture is upstream of everything—upstream of laws, institutions, even leadership. And until our culture changes, no reform will last. Because policy without value is just paperwork.

We must be honest: this country is not designed for deep thinking. Not yet. And until we make it so—not just on paper, but in practice—we will keep raising brilliant minds trapped in shallow waters. We will keep producing hustlers who run fast but go nowhere.

If we want to break this cycle, we must stop romanticizing the hustle. We must start rewarding patience, honoring discipline, and building structures that outlive us. Because the future will not be built by those who merely grab—it will be built by those who dig. And right now, we’re not digging. We’re scrambling.

How Governor Otti’s Bold EEDC Deal Will Electrify Abia’s Industrial Revolution – By Ebere Uzoukwa, PhD

In a bold and visionary move, Governor Alex Chioma Otti has taken a decisive step toward resolving one of Abia State’s most enduring developmental challenges—access to steady, reliable electricity. Through his administration’s strategic push to acquire a 60% equity stake in the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) as it operates within Abia State, Governor Otti is not merely seeking to fix power supply; he is laying the foundation for a full-scale economic transformation anchored on industrialization, MSME growth, and inclusive development.

This engagement with Interstate Electrics, the parent company of EEDC, marks a significant shift from passive advocacy to a hands-on, investment-driven approach. For the first time, the Abia State Government is asserting its intention to not just participate in, but co-own and reform a critical utility. The objective is clearly to make reliable power the bedrock of a new economic agenda especially in underserved regions such as Abia North and parts of Abia Central, which are not currently covered by Geometric Power.

Governor Otti’s vision aligns seamlessly with his administration’s well-articulated focus on industrialization and the empowerment of Micro, Small, and Medium-scale Enterprises (MSMEs). Electricity is the oxygen of modern industry—whether it’s processing agricultural produce, driving local manufacturing, or fueling the creative and digital economies. For MSMEs which form the backbone of Abia’s economy, steady electricity means lower operational costs, higher productivity, business sustainability, and massive job creation.

More than a shareholding arrangement, this acquisition represents a bid for strategic control; one that allows the government to reform, invest in, and expand power infrastructure according to Abia’s development blueprint. The administration is already in advanced negotiations, and Governor Otti has emphasized transparency, fairness, and a people-first approach as the guiding principles in finalizing the deal.

Importantly, this initiative is not just about economic growth; it is about equitable development. By targeting areas long neglected in energy access, Governor Otti is reaffirming his commitment to a balanced, all-inclusive development agenda. In his view, electricity is not a luxury but a right and a fundamental driver of growth that no community in Abia should lack.

The seriousness of this initiative is underscored by the active involvement of top government officials, including the Commissioners for Power, Finance, and Justice. The Hon. Commissioner for Power, Engr. Ikechukwu Monday, captured the essence of the move succinctly—guaranteeing reliable electricity to unlock the State’s manufacturing and industrial potential.

Ultimately, Governor Otti’s electricity acquisition initiative is not just a power sector reform but an economic masterstroke. It reflects a government that is proactive, visionary, and focused on building the hard infrastructure needed to drive sustained development. This bold move is a model worthy of emulation by other state governments across Nigeria, reaffirming that with purposeful leadership, subnational entities can indeed shape their destinies.

Abia is not just seeking electricity—it is powering its future.

Gov Alia Sacks Chief of Staff, Commissioners.

In a dramatic shake-up, Governor Hyacinth Alia on Wednesday dissolved the entire State Executive Council, effectively sacking all commissioners and his Chief of Staff.

The announcement, which came shortly after the conclusion of the 12th State Executive Council meeting of 2025, was made public through a statement signed by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Tersoo Kula.

According to the statement, Governor Alia directed all outgoing commissioners to immediately hand over the affairs of their ministries to their respective permanent secretaries.

The move brings an abrupt end to the tenure of officials who have worked alongside the governor for the past two years.

While thanking the former commissioners for their service, Alia urged those who may not be reappointed to remain loyal to the party, noting that their exit would open the door for other qualified citizens to contribute to the state’s development.

“No one is being pushed out. Rather, space is being created for others to serve,” Kula stated.

The biggest surprise of the day was the replacement of the Chief of Staff, Mr. Paul Biam. In his place, the governor appointed renowned legal practitioner and two-term former Attorney General of the state, Mr. Moses Atagher.

Atagher, who also once served as the acting Managing Director of the Federal Mortgage Bank, is expected to bring seasoned administrative expertise to the governor’s inner circle.

Reacting on behalf of the dissolved cabinet, former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice and Public Order, Mr. Bemsen Mnyim, thanked Governor Alia for the opportunity to serve.

“At every stage in life, everywhere you are called to serve is a school. We have learnt a lot while working with you,” he said.

While no official reason has been given for the sweeping changes, political observers believe the governor may be repositioning his administration ahead of the second half of his tenure.

Constitution Review: Gov Otti Staying True To Conviction By Kazie Uko

One of the most memorable and eventful work I have had to undertake as a media professional outside of the newsroom was working with the then gubernatorial aspirant and now Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, during his campaigns. I was introduced to Dr. Otti in 2018 by our mutual friend, the irrepressible Prince Emeka Obasi (God bless his soul), a quintessential journalist and publisher of the Hallmark Newspaper, who ascended into eternity in 2022, to help organise and strengthen Otti’s media.

Governor Otti, then candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), was making his second attempt for the gubernatorial office of Abia State. He had run for the same office in 2015 on the platform of APGA and was coasting to victory when the results of the election was magically flipped to favour the candidate of the then ruling party in the state, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Even though Candidate Otti had gone to the courts to claim his victory and got the Appeal Court declare him winner, his hope of becoming Governor in 2015 was eventually sealed by the Supreme Court, which effectively shut the door against him in a very controversial decision.

I joined the Alex Otti Campaign Organisation in 2018 as the Director of Media and Publicity. It was my very first outing in local politics. I was born and bred in Aba and spent my formative years in the Enyimba City, where I attended both primary and secondary schools before leaving for ‘greener pastures’ in Lagos. So, I can confidently say that I am Nwa Aba! By the time the campaign train roared into life, it was apparent that a new wave of communicating political messages in Abia had begun, notwithstanding initial taunts by the ruling PDP and its agents that Candidate Otti imported strangers from his base in Lagos to take over Abia government. The 2019 election came and went and as usual PDP had a field day, manipulating the results of the election to maintain its strangle-hold on Abia. But Otti was not discouraged.

Just like many who had been with Otti since 2014, when he resigned his lucrative job as the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of one of Nigeria’s then foremost banks, Diamond Bank (now merged with Access Bank), I saw in him a genuine desire to bring about a positive change in the lives of the residents and citizens of Abia and the state, and stuck with him. Many of us volunteered our services and support pro bono.

So, in 2022, when we returned for the campaigns in Abia for the jinx-breaking 2023 election, the campaign team became bigger as the stakes were obviously higher and so there was a lot of adjustments to accommodate new entrants. Meanwhile, Candidate Otti had moved from APGA to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and finally settled in Labour Party (LP). Otti’s entry into Labour Party and subsequent adoption as the party’s gubernatorial candidate had immediately shot the party into limelight in Abia and positioned it as the biggest opposition to the incumbent PDP. Again, I was appointed into the media team, this time as the Head of Media, working directly with Dr. Otti. Unlike in 2018-2019 when I worked out of the campaign office, this time I was embedded in Candidate Otti’s convoy.

The 2022-2023 campaign was more intense for obvious reasons. First, it was the third time that Dr. Otti was taking a shot at the office of the governor of Abia State. Second, the mal-administration going on in Abia under PDP had got to a very embarrassing and putrefying level that Nigerians were now making a mockery of the state, wondering whether anything good can come out of Abia. The third was confronting a political behemoth, whose only winning strategy was perfecting the fraudulent art of rigging elections with result from one local government area.

In the course of the campaign for the 2023 governorship election in Abia, we traveled the breadth and depth of Abia, meeting political, religious, traditional, business and various other stakeholders and groups across party lines in every nook and cranny of the state. It was a very memorable experience for me, for which I remain ever grateful to Governor Otti. I got to really know Abia with its rich natural endowments and saw firsthand the rot and degradation that the state had been allowed to become by its past leaders, especially in the last 24 years, prior to the election. Aba, the commercial nerve of Abia was a shadow of its old self from the days of old Imo State, when Dee Sam Mbakwe was the Governor. Ditto for Umuahia, the capital of Abia, which remained a glorified village, even after 30 years as a state capital.

It was as though past leaders in Abia State, especially during the PDP years, only cared about sharing political offices and appropriating the resources of the state to themselves and their cronies. No deliberate efforts were made to improve on the infrastructure left by Mbakwe or build new ones. I remember one of our campaign stops in a community in Abia South, where Candidate Otti met with the elders and leaders of the land. During the meeting, the community leaders wanted to extract a commitment from the Labour Party candidate that one of their own be appointed Commissioner for Finance, when he (Otti) gets into office. According to them, since Otti is from Abia Central and his deputy from Abia North, it was only logical that the next Commissioner for Finance or Secretary to the State Government would come from their zone, Abia South, precisely, from their community.

The community leaders were left dumbfounded when Otti, who was aspiring to become governor, told them point-blank that he would do no such thing. He gave them his reasons. According to Dr. Otti, political appointments under his government would be given to deserving individuals, based on merit, and not to communities or groups. Besides, Candidate Otti reminded his hosts that some of their sons and daughters had in the past been appointed into different offices in the State and the Federal Government and wondered how that impacted on the infrastructural development of the community. That was Governor Otti staying true to his conviction, not minding if lost the votes. He, however, promised them that if elected, he would work to bring genuine development to the community and the state in general. Abians, including political opponents, have since attested to the fact that Governor Otti has lived up to his promise to develop the State.

So, when I read in the media space the vile spewed by the former Executive Secretary of the National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA), Mr. Paul Ikonne, a member of the old order in Abia politics, who hid under the public hearing of the constitution review committee of the National Assembly, in Owerri, Imo State, recently, to malign Governor Otti for allegedly not calling for the creation of ‘Aba State’ out of the present Abia State, I knew instantly that his outburst was misplaced and borne out of deep-seated hate. It is not Otti’s fault that Ikonne and the groups he represents had the opportunity of presenting their case before the review committee in Owerri, but failed to seize the moment. Many other groups attended the committee hearing and were given opportunity to present papers on the aspects of the 1999 constitution they feel so strongly about change or review.

Many who know Otti and have been following his writings and public speeches before becoming Governor know that he has been consistent in his position that the creation of additional states out of the present 36-state structure would not in any way help the economic development of our country. His position is hinged on the fact that, except for about three, majority of the states are not viable and cannot survive outside of Federal bailout. Rather, he has often argued, just as he did in Owerri, that Nigeria should be more concerned about improving the economic structure of the current 36 states, double efforts at creating jobs for its youthful population outside of the civil service, and generally make the welfare of the ordinary Nigerian a priority.

He, however, made an exception for the creation of another state for the South East zone of the country, simply for political reasons. Out of the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria, only the South East has five states, whereas the others – South South, South West, North East and North Central, have six, while the North West zone has seven states. So, in order to correct this injustice and marginalisation of the South East people, Governor Otti clarified his speech that exception be made for the creation of additional state in the zone to give the region a sense of equity with the rest of the country. It is pertinent to note that many have welcomed and re-echoed Governor Otti’s position across the federation.

Governor Otti is never shy of calling a spade by its name or holding on to his conviction, no matter how politically incorrect one might accuse him of. As a first-class economist, successful bank chief executive officer, resilient political opposition figure, and now a sitting Governor of Abia State, Otti has rightfully earned his badge of honour and Nigerians, indeed the international community, listen and pay attention when he speaks. It is therefore incontinent of someone who rode on the back of patriarchy to rise to public office to attempt whipping up dubious public sentiment against a Governor who has worked very hard to turn around the fortune of Abia State for good, and whose record of achievements in two years is in clear sight, just because he does not agree with his view.

●Uko, former Chief Press Secretary to Governor Alex Otti, writes from Umuahia.
