Dave Umahi Launches Coastal Highway Guards to Protect Nigeria’s Landmark Road Project

Nigeria’s Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, has launched the Coastal Highway Guards, a 40-member security and monitoring team tasked with protecting the newly developed coastal highway and other government infrastructure along the route.

The initiative is aimed at preventing activities that could undermine the safety, functionality and long-term sustainability of the highway.

The team, led by retired General Adekunle Shodunke, will monitor the highway and respond to activities including vandalism, hawking, loitering and the unauthorised use of tricycles (keke) and motorcycles (okada) along designated sections of the road.

The guards are also expected to work closely with relevant security agencies to strengthen surveillance and ensure that government infrastructure is adequately protected.

The creation of the Coastal Highway Guards comes as the Federal Government continues efforts to develop and safeguard the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, one of Nigeria’s major ongoing transport infrastructure projects.

Beyond protecting the physical road infrastructure, the new monitoring structure is expected to help maintain orderly use of the highway, discourage activities that could compromise road safety and ensure that the investment in the project is preserved.

With the initial deployment of 40 officers, the Federal Government appears to be adopting a dedicated monitoring approach rather than relying solely on conventional security agencies to protect the highway.

The effectiveness of the initiative, however, will depend on sustained coordination between the guards, the police, other security agencies, road management authorities and affected communities along the coastal corridor.

If properly implemented, the Coastal Highway Guards could become an important component of the Federal Government’s broader strategy to protect critical infrastructure and ensure that the coastal highway delivers its intended economic and transportation benefits to Nigerians.

Hunter Biden Reveals Joe Biden’s Cancer Has Spread Further: ‘Very Painful and Debilitating’

Former U.S. President Joe Biden’s cancer has reportedly spread further, with his son, Hunter Biden, describing the former president’s condition as increasingly difficult and painful.

Hunter Biden made the disclosure during an interview with the BBC’s Newsnight programme on Friday, saying his 83-year-old father is battling cancer that has already spread to his bones.

“The cancer has spread, metastasized into his bones and further,” Hunter Biden said, describing the illness as “very painful and very debilitating in many respects.”

He did not provide further details about where the cancer may have spread, while Biden’s office has not publicly disclosed additional information about the extent of the former president’s illness.

Biden’s Cancer Diagnosis

Joe Biden’s prostate cancer diagnosis was first made public in May 2025. At the time, his office said he had prostate cancer with a Gleason score of 9, classified as Grade Group 5, with metastasis to the bone.

Despite the seriousness of the diagnosis, his office said the cancer appeared to be hormone-sensitive, a characteristic that can allow doctors to manage the disease through treatment.

Biden has also undergone treatment for other health concerns. His office said he had surgery in September 2025 to remove skin cancer lesions and completed radiation treatment for prostate cancer the following month.

His wife, Jill Biden, has previously acknowledged the long-term nature of her husband’s illness.

Speaking on the Let’s Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa podcast, she said the family understands that cancer will remain part of his life, describing the situation as a daily challenge.

Did Biden’s Health Affect His Presidency?

Hunter Biden was also asked about his father’s health and whether his battle with cancer may have affected his performance while he was still president.

The question was particularly significant because of Joe Biden’s widely criticised 2024 presidential debate against Donald Trump, after which concerns about his age and fitness intensified and he eventually ended his reelection campaign.

Hunter Biden acknowledged that watching his father struggle during the debate was “shocking.” However, he said the family did not know at the time that Biden had cancer.

He also rejected the suggestion that he could have controlled or influenced his father’s decisions.

Hunter Biden further said that Biden was not someone whose decisions could simply be taken away from him, stressing that his father had always made his own choices.

Biden Continues Public Engagement

Despite his illness and departure from the White House, Hunter Biden said his father remains active and committed to issues he considers important.

Joe Biden has continued to make occasional public appearances, including serving as a keynote speaker at the Maryland Democratic Party Gala in June.

“He’s still doing his thing,” Hunter Biden said, adding that his father continues to believe strongly in the United States.

“As long as he’s alive,” Hunter Biden added, “I promise you, he is going to continue to fight.”

Hunter Biden’s Legal History and Presidential Pardon

The interview also comes against the backdrop of Hunter Biden’s highly controversial legal history.

In June 2024, Hunter Biden was convicted on three federal felony charges relating to the purchase and possession of a firearm while addicted to a controlled substance. He later pleaded guilty to federal tax charges involving unpaid taxes.

In December 2024, then-President Joe Biden issued his son a presidential pardon covering the federal offenses. The decision generated significant controversy because Biden had previously indicated that he would not pardon his son.

The latest disclosure about Joe Biden’s health adds another chapter to the former president’s post-White House life, as his family continues to deal publicly with a serious cancer diagnosis.

For now, however, Hunter Biden’s comments provide the latest account of the progression of the illness, while further medical details have not been publicly released by Joe Biden’s office.

Russia’s African Recruitment Drive: How Foreign Fighters Are Drawn Into a Deadly War

Russia is reportedly intensifying efforts to recruit fighters from Africa as casualties mount on the battlefield, with investigators warning that foreign recruits are being drawn into a recruitment network that allegedly stretches from local intermediaries to international coordinators.

According to sources cited in the report, the recruitment operations function through multiple layers. Individuals who make direct contact with prospective recruits may represent only one part of a broader network involving financiers, transport facilitators and foreign-based coordinators.

“The people making contact with recruits are often only one part of a much larger chain involving financiers, transport facilitators and foreign coordinators,” a source told NewsDay, stressing that arresting local recruiters alone may not be enough to dismantle the networks.

The source argued that authorities would need to follow financial transactions and identify the international figures coordinating the recruitment activities if they are to effectively disrupt the operations.

Russia’s reported recruitment push comes amid the heavy human cost of its war in Ukraine.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has accused the Russian military of treating foreign fighters as expendable manpower, claiming that they are frequently deployed in some of the most dangerous areas of the battlefield.

“They use them on the most difficult directions on the battlefield,” Sybiha said in an interview broadcast by PBS on July 3.

His comments point to concerns that foreign recruits, particularly those with limited military experience, could face exceptionally high risks once deployed.

The Kyiv-based war-crimes watchdog Truth Hounds estimates that Russia could seek to recruit about 18,500 foreign fighters in 2026, representing a nearly sixfold increase from the beginning of the war.

Researchers say African recruits constitute an important part of this effort.

Kenza Rharmaoui, one of the authors of an April 29 report examining Russia’s alleged exploitation of foreign fighters, said interviews with former recruits and other sources indicated that some Africans sent to the battlefield remained in combat for only a short period before being killed or captured.

According to Rharmaoui, the people interviewed had generally spent less than two months—and in some cases about a month—in combat before their involvement ended.

Beyond the dangers of combat, researchers have raised concerns about the difficulty foreign recruits may face if they attempt to leave after signing contracts.

Rharmaoui warned that recruits should not assume that entering a military contract with Russia would necessarily provide an easy route home.

Her message to potential recruits was blunt: once they enter the system, leaving may not be straightforward.

The allegations highlight the increasingly international dimension of the Russia-Ukraine war, where manpower shortages and battlefield casualties are reportedly driving efforts to attract recruits from countries far from the conflict.

For African youths considering such offers, the reports underscore the importance of understanding exactly who is recruiting them, what contracts require, where they may ultimately be deployed and what legal protections or avenues for withdrawal are available.

The recruitment networks described in the reports also raise a wider question for governments across Africa: how much of this activity is taking place through local intermediaries, and who ultimately finances and coordinates the operations?

As Russia’s demand for additional manpower grows, investigators say identifying and disrupting the networks behind foreign recruitment—not merely arresting individual recruiters—will be critical to understanding and potentially stopping the flow of recruits into the war.

2027: SDP Arochukwu Chapter Backs APC’s Ikenna Ukwa for Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Seat

A major political realignment may be taking shape in Arochukwu Local Government Area ahead of the 2027 general elections, as the Social Democratic Party (SDP) Arochukwu LGA chapter has endorsed the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency seat, Chief Ikenna Nicholas Ukwa.

The endorsement was contained in a communique dated August 6, 2026, and signed by the SDP Arochukwu LGA Chairman, Elder Nnanna Isaac Uwakwa, and the party’s Secretary, Chief Agwu Ogbonnaya Godwin.

The document was also endorsed by the chairmen of the party across the 11 wards in Arochukwu LGA, following an extensive meeting involving members of the LGA executive committee, ward chairmen, stakeholders and other party members.

According to the communique, the decision followed consultations with members and critical stakeholders within the local government.

The SDP leadership said it resolved to place the interests of the people of Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency above partisan considerations, leading to its decision to support Ukwa, who is contesting under the platform of the APC.

The party described Ukwa as a candidate with the vision, competence, capacity, experience and commitment required to provide effective representation and attract meaningful development to the constituency.

The SDP chapter further expressed confidence that his leadership would contribute to economic growth, youth empowerment, infrastructural development, education, healthcare and an improved quality of life for constituents.

It subsequently directed its members, supporters and political associates across the 11 wards of Arochukwu LGA to work together, mobilise grassroots support and vote for Ikenna Ukwa in the 2027 National Assembly election.

The endorsement represents a notable cross-party development in the build-up to the 2027 election, particularly as a chapter of the SDP has publicly thrown its weight behind a candidate contesting on the platform of the APC.

The development could further intensify political realignments and grassroots mobilisation in Arochukwu LGA as political parties and candidates begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 contest for the Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency seat.

EFCC Arraigns 3 Individuals, 2 Companies Over Alleged ₦652.18bn Petrocam Theft, Money Laundering

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned three individuals and two companies before the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, over an alleged theft and money laundering involving ₦652.18 million belonging to Petrocam Trading Nigeria Limited.

The defendants — Jacob Acheneje Okolo, Yakubu Wisdom Onu Solomon and Issa Aloba Lateef, alongside Upper-Level Energy Resources and Crescent Integrated and General Merchandise Limited — were arraigned before Justice Olubunmi O. Abike-Fadipe on an eight-count charge bordering on conspiracy to steal, stealing and money laundering.

The defendants had initially been scheduled for arraignment on July 8, 2026, but the proceedings were adjourned following the absence of Lateef and his lawyer.

According to the EFCC, one of the counts alleged that Okolo and Upper-Level Energy Resources dishonestly converted ₦343.76 million belonging to Petrocam Trading Nigeria Limited for their personal use between 2022 and 2025.

Another count accused the same defendants of allegedly stealing and converting an additional ₦200.93 million belonging to the company.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to all eight counts.

Bail applications

Following the pleas, counsel to the first, second and third defendants, C.T. Ahmadu, asked the court to grant his clients bail on liberal terms.

Ahmadu argued that the defendants were presumed innocent until proven guilty and that the alleged offences were bailable. He also told the court that the defendants intended to call witnesses in their defence during the trial.

Counsel to the fourth and fifth defendants, Kola Gbadamosi, also made an oral application for bail, relying on judicial authorities in support of his request.

However, EFCC counsel, I.G. Akhanolu, opposed the bail applications for the first and third defendants, particularly on the grounds that they had allegedly failed to honour previous invitations from the commission.

The prosecution also urged the court to impose stringent bail conditions, citing the substantial amount involved in the case and the need to ensure that the defendants remain available throughout the trial.

Akhanolu told the court that the prosecution would call six witnesses to establish its case.

After considering the arguments from both sides, Justice Abike-Fadipe granted Okolo bail in the sum of ₦200 million, with two sureties resident within the court’s jurisdiction.

Solomon was granted bail in the sum of ₦50 million, with two sureties who must own landed property within the jurisdiction.

For Lateef, the court ordered that he should continue to enjoy the administrative bail previously granted by the EFCC pending the determination of his formal written bail application.

The judge further directed counsel to the fourth defendant to file the written bail application within seven days.

The case has been adjourned to December 8 and 9, 2026, for the commencement of trial.

The allegations against the defendants remain unproven, as the court has yet to determine their guilt.

Adamawa Man, 30, Arrested Over Alleged Killing of Father, Body Dumped in Abandoned Well

The Adamawa State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old man, identified as Peter Sinamai, over the alleged killing of his father in Sangere Gombi Local Government Area of the state.

Sinamai, who is reportedly a resident of the community, was arrested following a report received by operatives of the Adamawa State Police Command.

According to the command’s spokesperson, SP Suleiman Nguroje, preliminary investigations indicated that the suspect allegedly killed his father and disposed of his body in an abandoned well within the community.

“The corpse has been recovered and deposited at the mortuary for autopsy,” Nguroje said in a statement issued on Friday.

The Adamawa State Commissioner of Police, Kabiru Hassan, has consequently ordered a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The police said the suspect would be charged to court upon the completion of the investigation.

The Commissioner of Police condemned the alleged act and assured residents that the command would continue to protect lives and property while ensuring that justice is served.

Hassan also appealed to members of the public to avoid violence when resolving family disagreements, urging them to seek lawful and peaceful means of settling disputes and to involve appropriate authorities whenever conflicts arise.

The incident comes amid renewed attention on cases involving violence within families.

In a related development in April, an Anambra State High Court sitting in Awka sentenced Ifeanyi Anizoba Jnr to death by hanging after finding him guilty of killing his father, Ifeanyi Anizoba.

Justice Chukwudi Okaa, who presided over the case, held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

In the Adamawa case, however, the police investigation is still ongoing, and the allegation against Sinamai remains subject to judicial determination.

Osun 2026: IGP Disu Pledges Police Neutrality, Warns Politicians Against Vote-Buying, Thuggery

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Tunji Disu, has assured Nigerians that the Nigeria Police Force will remain neutral and professional before, during and after the August 15 governorship election in Osun State.

Disu gave the assurance on Friday in Abuja during a meeting with civil society organisations (CSOs) led by Auwal Rafsanjani of the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), where discussions centred on security arrangements for the forthcoming election.

The IGP said the police had put robust security measures in place to guarantee a peaceful, free and credible poll, stressing that officers deployed for election duties had been instructed to discharge their responsibilities professionally and without political bias.

According to Disu, the Nigeria Police Force has no preferred candidate or political party and is only interested in ensuring that the lawful choice of Osun voters is respected.

“The Nigeria Police Force remains a professional, apolitical and impartial institution.”

He further stated that the police had “no candidate, no political party and no vested interest in the outcome of the election other than ensuring that the lawful choice of the people prevails.”

Disu disclosed that security personnel and operational equipment had already been deployed across Osun State as part of preparations for the election.

He added that intelligence gathering had also been intensified to detect and prevent possible threats before they could disrupt the electoral process.

The police chief warned that individuals involved in vote-buying, voter intimidation, ballot box snatching, thuggery and other electoral offences would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law, regardless of their political affiliation or status.

“Anyone found engaging in vote buying, voter intimidation, ballot box snatching, thuggery or any other electoral offence will be dealt with in accordance with the law, irrespective of political affiliation or status,” he said.

Disu Calls for Peaceful Election

The IGP urged political parties, candidates and their supporters to conduct themselves peacefully and avoid actions capable of threatening the credibility of the election.

He stressed that the contest should be determined by competing ideas, policies and the choice of voters rather than violence, intimidation or other unlawful means.

Disu also called on residents of Osun State to participate actively in the election and exercise their civic responsibility without fear.

With heightened security preparations and the police promising impartiality, attention now shifts to August 15, when Osun voters will head to the polls to choose their next governor.

Naira Slips Again as Dollar Hits N1,365 at Official Market, N1,430 on Parallel Market

The Nigerian naira recorded another slight decline against the United States dollar at the official foreign exchange market on Thursday, August 6, 2026, while the currency also weakened further at the parallel market.

Data published by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) showed that the naira traded at an indicative Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM) rate of N1,364.8846 per dollar before closing at N1,365.1000/$.

This represents a depreciation of about N1.25 per dollar from the previous day’s closing level of N1,363.8491.

The latest movement indicates that the naira remains under pressure despite the relatively modest day-to-day change at the official market.

The naira recorded a more noticeable movement at the parallel market, with the buying rate remaining unchanged while the selling rate increased by N5 compared with the previous trading session.

According to Aboki FX, the dollar was bought at N1,420 and sold at N1,430 on Thursday.

The widening gap between the official and parallel-market rates remains an important indicator of demand and supply conditions in Nigeria’s foreign exchange market.

At the reported rates, there was a difference of about N65 per dollar between the official closing rate of N1,365.10 and the parallel-market selling rate of N1,430.

Although the official-market decline was relatively small, the continued weakness of the naira highlights the persistent pressure in the foreign exchange market.

For businesses and consumers who rely on imported goods, foreign currency movements can influence the cost of imports, raw materials, transportation and other dollar-linked expenses.

The parallel-market movement is also significant because sustained differences between official and street rates can affect market expectations and the cost at which some businesses source foreign currency.

The naira’s performance in the coming trading sessions will therefore remain closely watched as market participants assess dollar supply, demand and broader foreign-exchange conditions.

Note: The CBN figures referenced above are official market data, while the parallel-market rates are based on rates reported by Aboki FX and may vary by location and dealer.
